Miles Agmen-Smith

Miles is a senior commercial lawyer who has practised in New Zealand, as a partner in both a medium and a national law firm, and in the UK.

 

He has substantial experience in commercial and corporate law including business sales, purchases and other transactions, structure issues, branding, marketing, legal compliance, intellectual property protection and other areas relevant to the needs of business clients.

 

Miles has special expertise in franchising including all aspects of franchise system establishment and operation, agreements, disclosure documents, industry compliance issues, export and disputes. He is the immediate past Chairman of the Franchise Association of New Zealand Inc., and often asked to contribute articles and present on franchising in New Zealand and overseas. He drafted the current industry standard Code of Practice and is involved in the current move to draft franchise legislation. He was also the previous NZ representative on the World Franchise Council and the Asia Pacific Franchise Confederation.

 

In addition he has wide experience in Trust and Estate protection issues and organisational structure. Miles is a Registered Trustee Member of the New Zealand Trustee Association. He was the joint presenter of the New Zealand Law Society National Seminar on Not For Profit Organisations.

Catherine Sumpter

Associate

Catherine Sumpter is a graduate of the University of Auckland and joined ASCO in 2008 after practising previously commercial litigation having been admitted to the Bar in 2007.


Catherine is also a graduate of the University of Tours (France) with a BA English and Post Graduate Diploma in French Linguistics. Catherine advises clients on all aspects of Commercial Law and regularly drafts commercial contracts including franchising, licensing, supply, manufacturing, shareholders Agreements and website terms of Use.


She also represents clients in commercial, relationship property and employment disputes. French-born Catherine can rely on a network of French speaking barristers she has formed to assist her French speaking clients in all legal matters and is well connected in Auckland circles. 


She is fluent in French and speaks German and Spanish. She has previously lived and worked in the UK and Australia. Catherine also is involved with the running of the French and West Indian communities in her spare time and is a member of the French New Zealand Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
