Many people choose a lawyer based on recommendation, rapport, or proximity. What they don't always think to ask is: what happens to my file if things change?

From time to time, I have been asked by a client about our firm’s future plans and the likely continuity, and I welcome this conversation.  Legal practices, like any business, can change hands. A firm may be sold, merged, or wound down, often the trigger being one or more partners retiring. When that happens, your documents, your history, and your relationship can shift to a new firm with a different culture, different systems, and different people. You may not be consulted. You may simply receive a letter telling you where your file/deeds now live.

Before engaging a legal firm for ongoing matters, it's reasonable to ask: Is this firm structured for the long term? Do they have a succession plan? Who looks after my file if my lawyer moves on?

A well-established firm with clear internal structure and succession plan means your matters are held within a team that understands your circumstances, and you can form a relationship with a firm that endures.
